How to Choose a Commercial Treadmill

Motor type, deck size, user weight and warranty: the five things that separate a commercial treadmill from a home machine.

The treadmill is the most used machine in almost every gym, hotel and apartment fitness center. Buying the wrong one usually means a slipping belt, a burnt-out motor and an out-of-order sign within a year. Here is what to check before you buy a commercial treadmill.

1. Motor type and rating

Commercial treadmills use AC motors rated for continuous duty, typically 4 HP or more. Home treadmills often quote a higher peak horsepower on a DC motor that cannot sustain it all day. Look for the continuous rating, not the peak.

2. Running surface

A 22 inch by 60 inch deck is the practical minimum for commercial use, and 62 inches or longer is better for taller runners. A wider deck feels safer for walkers and older users.

3. Maximum user weight

A commercial treadmill should be rated for at least 350 lb, and 400 lb is common. A higher rating usually means a heavier frame, stronger rollers and a longer life.

4. Hours of daily use

Manufacturers rate treadmills for light commercial use, such as a hotel or apartment, or full commercial use in a busy gym. Match the rating to how many hours a day the machine will actually run.

5. Warranty and service

Read the commercial warranty, not the residential one. Check how long the frame, motor, parts and labor are covered, and who will do the repairs in your area.

Not sure which model fits your facility? Request a quote and tell us how the treadmill will be used. We will recommend a model and quote freight to your ZIP code.
